ABRF 2017, "A Forum for Advancing Today’s Core Technologies to Enable Tomorrow’s Innovations," will bring together international leaders in our core disciplines to provide a vision of what can be done, and insight toward making further progress as we work in the present. Core facilities are uniquely positioned to lead efforts to develop and optimize workflows for the generation of reproducible data, as well as to implement and disseminate these methods among laboratories. Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to be inspired by recent scientific advances, as well as to gain practical knowledge on implementing methodologies today in order to support future discoveries.

The 2017 ABRF Award & Lecture
for Outstanding Contributions to Biomolecular Technologies
Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian and Professor David Klenerman invented a method of next-generation DNA sequencing which is commonly known today as “sequencing by synthesis” and is currently regarded as the most widely used platform to replace the conventional Sanger sequencing technique.
The Award and Lecture will be presented Monday, March 28th.
The Genomics track of ABRF 2017 provides information on the latest applications of next gen sequencing and molecular biological technologies as applied to questions of genome structure, dynamics, regulation, and more. These are not just esoteric presentations of technology but often emphasize procedures and advice for integrating these latest applications into a core setting. Meeting participants can expect to hear discussions of single cell sequencing, CRISPR applications, clinical sequencing, data analysis and other topics. In addition, vendor presentations ensure participants are kept up to date on technology improvements and new resources imminently available. This information is critical to allow core personnel to be pro-active with regards to new technologies for their institutions.

Topics include: Cellular imaging: Live-cell imaging; Super-resolution on commercial systems; Recent advances in live-cell and 3D super-resolution imaging. Administration: Branding and marketing, S10 and other grant opportunities & Training. Deep imaging: General clearing talk, MP + clearing, Light sheet & 3D reconstruction.
The ABRF 2017 Proteomics track features groundbreaking research and methods as well as practical information and discussion for core lab implementation. Going beyond the hype to daily realities, topics will cover chemical proteomics, practical quantitative proteomics, realistic reproducibility, and bioinformatics. Mass spectrometry crossover topics include metabolomics and antibody reproducibility. ABRF Research Groups -- MRG (Metabolomics), PRG (Proteomics), sPRG (Proteomics Standards), iPRG (Proteome Informatics), PSRG (Protein Sequencing), and WIN (Workflow Interest Network) -- will present study results and invite participation in new studies.
Core Administration Track
One of the many unique aspects of the ABRF annual meeting is its focus on administrative issues from the scientist’s perspective. The ABRF 2017 Administration Track offers many must-attend sessions, including workshops highlighting how to measure return on investment; implementing standards for rigor & reproducibility; and developing core-commercial partnerships. There will also be an innovative topic session focused on a core-graduate school collaboration, a walk-up "Admin is In" Booth will be available in the Exhibit hall, and there is the return of the (amazingly) popular NIH/Federal policy update session.
Trending Topics Track
Presentations in the “trending track” focus on the latest biomolecular technologies not covered in the established tracks in order to include the full diversity of services offered at core facilities. Trending topics provide coverage of both standard core offerings and upcoming and novel services not yet widely available but expected to have increasing impact. Some of the topics included this year are flow cytometry, 3-D printing, bioinformatics, and information technology (BioIT) focused on enabling core facility science. A new offering this year will be a roundtable discussion organized by the iABRF (International ABRF Committee), featuring members of international core associations and societies that are attending ABRF 2017. Scientific sessions as well as more interactive workshop-type presentations allow ample opportunity for networking both among practitioners and for newcomers to speak with experienced researchers.
Please consider submitting an abstract for a poster presentation at the 2017 ABRF Annual Meeting. This is a great opportunity to show off the contribution of your core to a research project, or share a hot technical tip, or present your institution’s approach to addressing a common core resource challenge. Several sponsored prizes will be available across all disciplines. The abstracts will be published in the Journal of Biomolecular Techniques and listed in PubMed. Posters are on display throughout the meeting, and will be featured during an evening poster reception with food and drink. This poster session is an outstanding instant networking opportunity.
